Warming Turmeric Tea | Homespun Capers. An immune boosting golden latte - vegan, paleo, refined sugar freeThis simple recipe is perfect this time of year when we really need some warming from the inside out! Whilst it may sound strange, turmeric tea, or “golden milk” has been consumed in India for many years, particularly to aid a cold or flu. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric really help to alleviate some of the discomfort of sinus-congestion etc.

The taste of this tea is similar to a milk based chai, and due to the cinnamon and pepper, it has a very warming effect on the body. Sweetened with coconut sugar or honey, it is a perfect comforting nightcap. The black pepper helps the bioavailability (the ability for your body to use the nutrients) of the turmeric, and gives a pleasant spicy note.

My recipe uses almond milk, but you could just as easily use your other favourite milk – I imagine a mix of coconut and almond would be delicious! I generally use dried turmeric, but finely grated fresh turmeric would also work – just add a little more than the recipe suggests (or to taste). If you wish, adding some other spices such as some dried or fresh ginger would also be a welcome addition. Stay warm x

This recipe is very flexible, feel free to adjust the amount of sweetness and spices to your taste. That said, I do recommend including the black pepper due to its help in absorbing turmeric (see above).

Serves 2.

Warming Turmeric Tea

500ml | 2 cups of almond milk (or coconut-almond or other non-dairy milk)
1/2 – 3/4 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
2 tbls coconut sugar, honey or your favourite unrefined sweetener (or to taste)
2 tsp coconut oil
Ginger or other spices (optional, to taste)

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over a high heat. Remove from element when hot, but before boiling and whisk till combined. Taste, adjusting sweetness and spices if desired, and serve.
